Hi, my name is Joe Meneilly. I graduated from Syracuse University's
Illustration program in 2000, and had the privilege to study with some
outstanding professional illustrators during my time there. My own
artistic style is rather old fashioned, utilizing traditional materials
and techniques that are quite similar to those used by history's
masters, whom I have looked to as a source of inspiration for so long.
As you might have noticed if you've had a chance to browse through my
galleries, my favorite subjects stem from life and I truly enjoy
painting people and animals. Like those masters from history that I
adore, and like the many talented illustrators that I have also found
inspiration from, I also love to tell stories with my art, which makes
illustration a perfect combination of things that I enjoy. Whether you
view the paintings by Caravaggio and Leonardo, or look to the
illustrations of Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker, you will find
strong storytelling a consistent theme.
It is all of these ideals that I look to when approaching an
illustration project, from early concept sketches to the final,
completed illustrations. While much of my focus is on traditional
painting and drawing methods, I also can provide a variety of
illustration services and styles, including cartooning, simple editorial
concept illustrations, digital illustration and flash animation. So
please, take a moment to browse my galleries and let me know if there is
anything that you find interesting. There is no endeavor in life that I
am more passionate for, and I hope that I might be able to help you! If
you have a project in mind that you think I may be able to help you
with, please do not hesitate to contact me to request a quote, or simply
to discuss and brainstorm.
Below is the initial concept sketch, detailed drawing then final
painting created for a narrative illustration of a scene from
The Decameron. Looking
through the three images gives you a feel for the process that I go
through in creating an illustration, though it does leave out two very
important steps in researching the subject matter and developing visual references.
Thank you for taking the time to look through my artwork.
